Hiawatha Extension

2.5km Skate Ski,Single Classic,Fat Bike

Closed

The trail branches off the Crystal Creek Trail around the 1km point. The trail has lots of hills and curves, sharp turns, big climbs and fast descents. It rejoins the Crystal Creek Trail after a big uphill climb just past the 1km point. This trail is rated BLACK. (Advanced) 

Inner Loop Extension

2km Skate Ski,Single Classic,Fat Bike

Caution

This 2 km trail branches off the and rejoins the Crystal Creek Trail around the 1.5 km point. The level terrain allows for a fast pace on this loop. There are small rolling hills surrounded by beautiful scenery. This trail is rated BLUE. (Intermediate)

Kinsmen Lighted

2km Skate Ski,Double Classic,Fat Bike

Open

All the trails on the Crystal Creek Trail System start on this trail. A gentle loop with gradual up hills and down hills. The simple turns and hills makes for an easy beginner trail or a great cool down after a long day’s ski. This trail is lit for evening skiing. The lights are on (when there is snow) every day from dusk to 10:00 pm. This trail is rated GREEN. (Easy)

Mabel Lake Flats Extension

6km Backcountry Classic,Fat Bike

Closed

This extension branches off the Crystal Creek Trail just after crossing the Crystal Creek around the 3km point. A single classic track is groomed when conditions allow *(typically beginning mid January). The Mabel Flats loop is the first 6 km loop to the creek bridge and is rated GREEN (Easy) and the Mabel Hills loop is the final 4km loop to the lake and is rated BLACK. (Advanced)

Mabel Lake Hills

This extension branches off the Crystal Creek Trail just after crossing the Crystal Creek around the 3km point. A single classic track is groomed when conditions allow *(typically beginning mid January). The Mabel Flats loop is the first 6 km loop to the creek bridge and is rated GREEN (Easy) and the Mabel Hills loop is the final 4km loop to the lake and is rated BLACK. (Advanced)

The trail branches off the and rejoins the Crystal Creek Trail around the 2.5 km point. A challenging trail with an enjoyable balance of flats and hills. This trail is rated BLUE. (Intermediate)

Pinder System

Sugar Bush Extension

Open

A gentle loop with a quick descent at the beginning and a gently uphill climb at the exit. The combination of hardwood and pine trees adds to the beauty of the trail. All levels of skiers will enjoy this trail. The extension leaves and rejoins the Pinder Trail around the 3 km point. This trail is rated BLUE. (Intermediate)

Mockingbird Hill Extension

Open

This trail passes through a section of a the Mockingbird Pioneer and Christmas Tree Farm. One main hill on the trail loops around a lone maple tree. The extension leaves the Pinder Trail around the 1km point and rejoins in the same vicinity. This trail is rated BLUE. (Intermediate)

White Pine Extension

Open

This trail is an easy loop set within the borders of the main Pinder Trail. This extension leaves the Pinder Trail around the 1km point and rejoins it at in intersection with the Mockingbird Hill Extension. This trail is rated GREEN. (Easy)

Farmer Bob Loop

2.5km Skate Ski,Single Classic,Fat Bike

Open

The Farmer Bob Multi Use Trail follows through his retired maple syrup line as well as traversing through his Christmas tree plantation.  Gentle terrain. It is a good trail for beginners and experienced skiers who wish to concentrate on technique. This trail is rated GREEN. (Easy) 

Pinder

The Pinder Trail follows gentle terrain with no hills. It is a good trail for beginners and experienced skiers who wish to concentrate on technique. The trail then passes through a large section of maple sugar bush. This trail is rated GREEN. (Easy) 

Red Pine System

Coldwater Creek Extension

2.5km Skate Ski,Single Classic

Closed

This trail has some good climbs and steep descents that will require some quick maneuvering. It passes over the Coldwater Creek bridge and returns the skier to the Red Pine Trail and then back to the trail head. This extension offers access to Fourth Line Road where skiers can cross to access the Wishart Park Extension. This trail is rated BLACK. (Advanced)

Fish Hatchery Extension

Closed

This trail leaves the Red Pine Trail at about the 2.5km point and is recommended for those looking for speed. The two big downhills of the Screamer and the Double Screamer will get your adrenaline flowing before heading south toward the Coldwater Creek Extension and looping back up to join onto the Red Pine Trail to return to the trail-head. This trail is rated BLACK. (Advanced)

Red Pine

5km Skate Ski,Single Classic

Warm up on the first few kilometers of easy terrain passing through a magical forest of red pine trees before the trail becomes more challenging with sweeping downhills and numerous short climbs and turns. Finish the trail passing some gnarly old pine trees on the home stretch. Some of the Pines found in this area are over 200 years old. This trail is rated BLACK. (Advanced)

Helpful Information

Hiawatha Highlands in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is a wonderful destination for the public in the Spring, Summer, and Fall; however, in the Winter, Hiawatha Highlands is covered under land use agreements for the use of trail pass holders only. Please respect these restrictions. The trails are rented for paying cross country ski, snowshoe and fat bike customers from November to April, and fees collected from these customers are used to help maintain the trail systems throughout the year. In the winter, foot traffic and dog tracks damage the groomed trails and can cause serious injuries to customers of all ages and abilities, including the elderly, recreational skiers and elite athletes.

Walking

During the Winter season, walkers are required to use alternate trails such as Wishart Park, Strathclair Park, Elliot Park, Bellevue Park, Clergue Park, Odena trail and of course the Dog Park

Thank you for not trespassing and damaging the trails this winter at Hiawatha Highlands.
